Leadership Philosophy

A leader is a person who would not ask someone else to do something they would not do themselves. Leaders should be willing to lead by example and set the pace for those who are working with them. Leaders have to be open to change along with being dedicated and motivated to seeing that change through. Leaders must be humble and not strive for personal glory, good of the whole should be their priority. Lastly leaders should listen as much or more than they speak, understanding others is a large part of being a leader.

Leading by Example – Should be the number one priority of a leader.  This means “getting your hands dirty” along with everyone else. People are more willing to work alongside those who are setting the example of how/why to get things done.

Open to Change – Change happens even when we don’t want it too. Leaders must be open and accepting of the change. They also have to be dedicated and motivated to see that change through not matter how tough the situation may be.

Humble – Being able to put others ahead of yourself and working toward the good of the whole group. A leader should want each person on their team to succeed and for the team as a whole to accomplish great things. Their focus should not be one self, but on that of the team’s success.

Listen – This goes back to putting others ahead of yourself. Others opinions matter and leaders should listen as much or more than we speak. It’s all about making everyone feel a part of the team and wanting the whole team succeed.

Of the four leadership qualities I have selected, I feel that I still need to work on all four of them, but especially being humble and listening. Humble because that I get in a hurry and just want it done and done my way…so I do it myself instead of letting others do it and making it a team effort. Listening because it ties in with humble and forgetting about the other person. I have my ideas of how things should be done and sometimes I need to listen instead of barking orders because their ideas may actually be more beneficial to the group.

Leaders should be “just another drop in the bucket” alongside the others on their team.
